Independent Study

On August 15, I am leaving for a six-week journey to my ancestral homeland of Denmark. When there, my research will include expeditions to sites of specific past significance where I will paint small works in-situ and document the experience with photographs and log entries. The choice to paint and photograph these sites in the present signals a shift away from references that are located exclusively in the past.

In addition to these excursions, I will have access to my grandparents’ slides, will be visiting with local artists and investigating future residency opportunities. When not traveling around the country, I will be based out of an artist studio at Tversted Skole in northern Jutland where I will have a chance to read, write and re-work some of the paintings. Included on my list of readings are W.J.T. Mitchell’s Landscape and Power and W.J. Sebald’s Austerlitz.

These photos are from an earlier trip in 2012 and represent some of the places I will be visiting.
